There have been 3 California trials completed of an estimated 13,400 pending lawsuits against St. Louis-based Monsanto owned by the German chemical giant Bayer A.G.
Since August of 2018, California juries have awarded more than $2 billion in damages to plaintiffs claiming they developed Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after using Monsanto’s Roundup Glyphosate weed killer.
Roundup is a popular weed killer sold by Monsanto and is the trade name for the chemical compound Glyphosate. This chemical compound is what the Roundup lawsuits claim was a significant factor in the development of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Approximately 250 million pounds of Glyphosate is sprayed on agricultural lands, crops, lawns to combat unwanted weeds, grasses, and driveways each year.
Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, wants federal lawsuits involving the weed-killer moved out of California.
Bayer said that it would appeal the verdicts.
“The verdict in this trial has no impact on future cases and trials, as each one has its own factual and legal circumstances,” the company said.
In the first Roundup verdict (August 2018), district school groundskeeper Dewayne "Lee" Johnson was ultimately awarded $78.5 million. Johnson was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2014.
Johnson testified that he sprayed a high-concentration version of the Roundup's herbicide (Ranger Pro) about 20 to 30 times a year for 2 to 3 hours a day as part of his job from 2012 to 2016.
A San Francisco jury had awarded Johnson $250 million in punitive damages and $39.25 million in compensatory damages. A Superior Court Judge later reduced the number of punitive damages to $39.25 million, totaling $78.5 million.
In the second Roundup verdict (March 2019), A California jury awarded $80 million to Edwin Hardeman, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2015.
Mr. Hardeman had used Roundup for more than 25 years to treat poison oak, overgrowth and weeds on his San Francisco Bay Area property.
In the most recent case (May 2019), a California jury awarded an elderly couple $55 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages.
Alva and Alberta Pilliod of Livermore, CA, used Roundup weed killer on their property for more than three decades and were both diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
